AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron women's basketball program will commemorate its 2014-15 campaign at its year-end celebration on Friday, May 1 on the FirstMerit Foundation Club Level (fifth floor) of InfoCision Stadium - Summa Field.
The early registration deadline for the celebration is Friday, April 24. For more information about purchasing tickets and the schedule of events, contact Candace Smith, Director of Basketball Operations, at (330) 972-8274 or clw23@uakron.edu.
Doors for the event will open at 5:30 p.m.; with dinner and the awards ceremony beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased through the women's basketball office, and are $25 per person if purchased on or before Friday, April 24 and $35 thereafter. Tables with seating for eight people can be reserved for $180 ($200 after April 24).
There will also be a silent auction for those in attendance, with prizes including an autographed and framed jersey, a road trip with the Zips for the upcoming season, honorary coach for a game, autographed and encased basketball, framed team photo and two team gift baskets.
The Zips surpassed the 20-win plateau for the third-consecutive season for the first time in program history in 2014-15, registering a 22-9 overall record, including 12-6 in the Mid-American Conference.
Senior Sina King (Waterford, Ohio) became only the second Akron player to be named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year after leading the conference in scoring (20.3) and rebounding (9.3).
King was also named by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) as an honorable mention All-American, joining Rachel Tecca (2013-14), Cheryl Bowles (1999-2000) and Pam Arnold (1986-87) as Zips who have earned honorable mention All-America accolades during their distinguished Akron careers.
Collectively, the Zips registered third straight and fifth overall postseason appearance with berth in Women's National Invitation Tournament traveling to Kansas State.
Four Akron players earned All-MAC recognition as King was named a first-team selection, junior Anita Brown (Warren, Ohio) was tabbed to the second team, sophomore Hannah Plybon (Orrville, Ohio) was an third-team choice and freshman Kerri McMahan (Novi, Mich.) made the All-Freshman squad.
The 2014-15 Zips set several new single-season records, including, best start to a season (10-0), most regular-season victories (22), most home wins (13), best winning percentage (.710), triples made in a game (13) at Central Michigan and most combined points in a game (203) at Toledo.
In addition to its team accomplishments, Akron fielded several impressive individual accolades. King and Brown registered third- and fifth-best single-season scoring outputs in program history scoring 629 and 582 points, respectively. Plybon connected on a single-season record 97 three pointers, while head coach Jodi Kest earned her 350th career victory with a 100-65 win over Valparaiso.
King capped her career with 888 rebounds and 1,634 points, the third- and fourth-highest totals in program history, while playing in 124 career games.
