Akron Softball Splits Twinbill at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –The University of Akron softball team split a twinbill at Youngstown State on Tuesday afternoon at the YSU Softball Complex.
Akron won the first game, 3-1, and fell 6-3 in the night cap.
The Zips, who have won five of their last seven contests, improved to 17-19 overall. The Penguins fell 13-21 overall.
In game one, the Penguins scored their lone run in the bottom of the first.
UA tied the game in the top of the third with two outs. Designated player Caitlyn Gambone (Canton, Ohio) had an RBI single to center field, scoring sophomore third baseman Alyssa Nicholas (Cortland, Ohio), who reached on a single down the right field line.
The Zips went up, 2-1, in the top of the fourth with two outs as senior shortstop Chelsea Wildey (Oviedo, Fla.) hit a tripled down the right field line, brining freshman first baseman Cassie Gillespie (Sylvania, Ohio) home, who reached on a walk.
Akron added an insurance run in the sixth as sophomore outfielder Savannah Fruin (Delray Beach, Fla.) came home on a catcher's error after doubling to right center field.
Junior right-hander Erin Seiler (Bowling Green, Ohio) picked up her 17th win of the season (17-12 overall. She struck out 13 batters and walked none.
Overall, Akron out-hit YSU, 8-4. The Penguins had three errors, while the Zips had one.
In the second game, YSU went ahead 3-0 with one run in the second and two runs in the third.
The Zips scored a solo run in the top of the fifth. Wildey singled to the left side, bringing home freshman outfielder Taylor Kirian (New Riegel, Ohio), who reached on a double to center field.
The Penguins added three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.
Akron threatened in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs, as Wildey doubled to left center for two RBI.
Senior outfielder Sara Pearson (Somerville, Ohio) hurled seven innings for her first complete game this season and took the loss (0-4). She fanned two while walking six.
Overall, YSU out-hit Akron, 8-5. Both teams committed two errors.
Akron travels to Toledo for a Mid-American Conference doubleheader on Friday, April 17, at 1 p.m.
