AKRON, Ohio – On the scoreboard as the visiting team, the University of Akron softball team shut out Buffalo, 1-0 in Mid-American Conference play, on a sunny but windy Saturday afternoon at its own Lee R. Jackson Field.
The game, part of a two-game weekend series, was originally supposed to take place in Buffalo. However, the Bulls' field was unplayable. Both games have been moved to Akron.
With the win, the Zips improved to 15-18 overall and 3-5 in Mid-American Conference play. The Bulls fell to 7-27 overall and 0-7 in league play.
After six scoreless innings, Akron scored the game's only run in the top of the seventh as lead-off batter sophomore third baseman Alyssa Nicholas (Cortland, Ohio) hammered her fifth home run of the season over the left center field fence.
The Bulls threatened with one hit in the bottom of the seventh, but the Zips' defense played tough to secure the win.
Junior right-hander Erin Seiler (Bowling Green, Ohio) struck out nine batters and walked one (15-12 overall, 3-5 MAC) while hurling all seven innings.
Overall, both teams had three hits and no errors.
Akron will host Buffalo in a MAC game on Sunday, April 12, at 1 p.m. at Lee R. Jackson Field.
