LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The Akron women's golf team lost its first match of the day before rain and lightning halted play early in the second match on Monday during day one of the Mid-American Conference Match Play Challenge at the Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club.
The Zips, the No. 6 seed in this year's event, fell 3-2 to No. 3 seed Bowling Green, with all five matches coming down to the final hole.
Sierra Everson and Laura Murray posted wins on the day, winning 1 UP over Fran Rodriguez and 2 UP over Mikayla Baer, respectively.
Everson fell behind on the third hole and trailed by as many as two holes through the first nine holes. After tying the match and then trailing by one with six holes to play, Everson won three-straight holes to take a 2 UP lead. However, Rodriguez would tie the match on the 17th hole. Everson would par the last hole for the 1 UP win.
Murray trailed for just one hole, dropping the first hole of the day before pushing the match all square on the second hole. From there, the match would be tied for just three more holes, with Murray leading by as many as two over the final 10 holes.
Frida Fougberg, Pader Her and Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva all lost their matches, 1UP.
Fougberg struggled early against Shelby Wilson, trailing by as many as two in the first eight holes. However, Foguberg would grab a brief lead on the ninth. The match would be all square with one to play, with Fougberg conceding the final hole to record the loss.
Like Fougberg, Her trailed Patricia Holt for most of the first nine hole, but battled back to make things interesting in the end. Her would trail by as many as two, but would push the match all square on the 10th hole and would even lead for two holes with four to play. After losing the lead briefly on 16 and recovering on 17, a bogey on 18 by Her would be the deciding factor in the match.
Velasco-Villanueva trailed Hannah Lewis for 11 of the first 16 holes before making a late rally. A par on No. 17 would put Velasco-Villanueva just one shot behind Lewis heading to No. 18, but both players would par the hole to give Lewis the 1 UP win.
Lesli Stolly, playing as an individual, fell 8&7 to Bowling Green's Lily Bartell.
The Zips will return to action on Tuesday when they face No. 8 Central Michigan in the first of two matches. Due to Monday's delay, Tuesday's matches will be nine holes instead of 18. Tee times are set for 7:30 a.m. ET.
