#13 Akron Rifle Team Stands Fifth at GARC Championship

OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 13 University of Akron rifle team stands fifth in the team standings after the first day of competition at the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championship at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center.
The Zips shot a 2,286 in the smallbore competition. Kentucky, which leads the nine-team championship after day one, won the event with a team score of 2,323. West Virginia was second with a 2,323.
Individually, Akron junior Matt Chezem (Simi Valley, Calif.) finished second overall with a 586.
In the final day of the championship on Sunday, March 1, senior Liz Berlin (DuBois, Pa.), freshman Julia Hatch (Northfield, Vt.), and junior Tim Hopkins (Olympia, Wash.) compete in air rifle at 8 a.m. CT. Chezem and sophomore Zachary Strohl (Barto, Pa.) conclude team competition with their air rifle matches at 10:10 a.m. CT.
Following competition, awards will be presented to the smallbore team champion, air file team champion, overall team champion, as well as individual champions in the smallbore and air rifle.
The GARC is made up of schools that have varsity rifle sponsored at their universities but not their universities respective conferences. Other schools competing this weekend are: Army, Kentucky, Memphis, Mississippi, Nebraska, NC State, and West Virginia.
