CLEVELAND– Senior punter Zach Paul (Broadview Heights, Ohio) has been tabbed the Mid-American Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for the East Division, the league announced on Monday.
In the 20-0 shutout of Kent State, Paul punted just three times for 117 yards (averaging 39.0), including a long of 45 yards. Two of those punts landed inside the 20. His final punt in the fourth quarter was downed at the one-yard line to start Kent's final drive of the game. The shutout was Akron's first over Kent State in 30 years (24-0 in 1985).
In 12 games, Paul has punted 71 times for 2,922 yards (41.2 average). Twelve of his punts have been longer than 50 yards, while 23 were inside the 20.
The MAC honor is Paul's second of his career and first this season. He is the fifth Zip to earn MAC honors this fall. Sophomore QB Thomas Woodson (Monroeville, Pa.) was the Offensive Player of the Week on Nov. 23, while senior LB Jatavis Brown (Belle Glade, Ohio) was named the Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 1. Senior PK Robert Stein (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore long snapper Michael Buddenberg (Massillon, Ohio) were tabbed the Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 5, and Sept. 28, respectively.
The bowl eligible Zips (7-5 overall, 5-3 MAC), under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Terry Bowden, are awaiting a bid to a postseason bowl.
