Men Place Sixth, Women Place Eighth at Bluegrass Invitational

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Akron men's and women's cross country teams put together strong performances on Saturday morning at the Bluegrass Cross Country Invitational at Masterson Station Park, hosted by the University of Kentucky.
The men's squad finished sixth out of 10 teams, while the women placed eighth in their own 10-team field.
Just a week removed from winning the Tommy Evans Invitational, junior Kyle Cochrun was once again Akron's top finisher, placing 15th overall in the 8K with a time of 24:42.03. Dan Zupan (25:19.24) and Garrett Crichlow (25:23.73) finished 39th and 42nd, and Trevor Norris clocked in at 25:35.53 for 52nd place.
Eric McCabe and Clayton Murphy finished less than one second apart, at 25:45.90 and 25:46.40. The pair placed 58th and 59th, respectively.
Also competing for Akron were Dylan Papp (84th, 26:28.08) and Martin Zegarelli (98th, 27:05.08).
On the women's side, freshman Natalie Zidd led the pack with a 33rd place finish, posting a 5K time of 18:02.60. Marisa Papp was not far behind in 44th place with a time of 18:33.20.
Sophomores Irene Frangos (18:58.00), Abbie Shea (19:09.60) and Karlie Lieberth (19:19.90) finished in 58th, 62nd and 65th place. Alexandra Blair (70th, 19:31.50) and Tara Snipes (73rd, 19:46.50) rounded out the scoring for the Zips.
Ohio State won the women's race, with 50 total points. The second, third and fourth place teams (Eastern Kentucky, Oklahoma State, Kentucky) were separated by just five points.
Eastern Kentucky won the men's title with 45 total points, and Oklahoma State came in a close second with 48.
Akron will compete next at the All-Ohio Championships on Oct. 3, hosted by Cedarville University.
