FAIRFAX, Va. -- McKenzi Rhodes hit her second home run in as many days, belting a three-run shot in the top of the fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie and carry Akron to a 7-3 victory over Binghamton on Sunday.
UA (11-4) finished the George Mason Cherry Blossom Classic with a 2-3 record, courtesy of a pair of victories over BU.
"We struggled a little after our first win this weekend, so it was nice to see us bounce back and finish with a win," said head coach Julie Jones. "Despite our tournament record, we got our bats going and battled offensively in every game. We were able to find some power with four different players hitting home runs, and even our outs were hard-hit balls.
"As a team, we have some work to do this week to prepare for our home opener, but we are looking forward to getting back on our home field."
The Zips got on the board first in the top of the third inning when Shawna Mailloux doubled through the left side with two outs to drive in Alyssa Nicholas. Mailloux would eventually score on a Binghamton infield error.
The Bearcats (7-10) answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, fueled by a triple from their second baseman.
Rhodes stepped to the plate and delivered at the right time in next frame, going yard with two outs to give UA a 5-2 edge.
Akron plated a run in the fifth on an RBI double from Jessica Schneider, and another one in the sixth for insurance, courtesy of a Mailloux sacrifice fly.
Erin Seiler went the distance in the circle for the Zips, allowing just two walks and striking out nine, improving her record to 6-1.
UA returns to the field on Saturday, March 22, for its home opener against Niagara at Lee R. Jackson Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. The Zips shut out the Purple Eagles earlier this season, 3-0, at the Rebel Spring Games.
