FAIRFAX, Va. -- Akron split a pair of games on the first day of the George Mason Cherry Blossom Classic, defeating Binghamton in game one, 5-3 in eight innings, and falling to host GMU 8-3 in game two.
UA (10-3) will play another doubleheader on Saturday, taking on Colgate at 10:30 a.m. before a rematch with Mason at 3:00 p.m.
Game One: Akron 5, Binghamton 3 (8)
Trailing by one heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, Taryn Allmon issued a two-run walkoff home run to push the Zips past Binghamton, 5-3 in the tournament opener.
Mackenzie Conrad came up with an RBI double with one out to score Savannah Fruin and tie the game at three in the eighth, before Allmon's homer won the game for UA.
Shawna Mailloux recorded her first home run of the season, going 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk and two runs scored. The sophomore's long ball in the bottom of the fifth inning tied the game at two and would force the game into extra innings.
Erin Seiler improved to 5-0 in the circle with the win, throwing her fifth complete game and striking out seven.
Binghamton (6-8) was led by two hits apiece from outfielders Sydney Harbaugh and Bridget Hunt.
Game Two: George Mason 8, Akron 3
Akron was held scoreless for the first five innings before a three-run sixth, but it was not enough to catch host George Mason in the second game.
Erin Pond and Chelsea Wildey were both 2-for-4, and Wildey added a pair of RBI.
Mason (5-11) claimed a 7-0 lead before UA responded in the top of the sixth inning. Mailloux drew a walk to start things off, and stole second with Pond at the plate. The sophomore singled to right center, moving Mailloux over to third and advancing to second on the throw in from the outfield.
Wildey stepped to the plate and roped a single to right center which was enough to score both runners and get the Zips on the board.
Still without an out, Conrad came up with the bases loaded and reached safely on a fielder's choice that scored Jessica Schneider.
That was as close as the Zips would come however, as GMU tacked on one more run in the sixth and allowed just one Akron baserunner in the seventh to put the game away.
Conrad was tagged with the loss, moving her record to 3-3 on the season.
