UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – For the second straight night, The University of Akron track and field program produced a number of record-setting performances among elite competition at the Penn State National Saturday.
In all, the Zips men's and women's teams combined for four first-place finishes, took down another school record, saw another meet record fall, and posted a host of personal-best marks.
Leading the way was redshirt freshman Weronika Gaudyn, who broke her own school record in the women's triple jump with a mark of 41-01.00. In a third-place finish, the native of Kracow, Poland easily surpassed her previous standard of 40-03.25, originally set at the Akron Opener last month.
After watching Shawn Barber set facility and meet records in the men's pole vault Friday night, junior international transfer Annika Roloff rewrote the meet record in the women's pole vault Saturday with a winning jump of 13-09.75. With the historic clearance, Roloff, a newcomer from Holzminden, Germany, surpassed the previous milestone that was set by former Akron All-American and school record holder Carrie Kayes of 13-09.25 in 2010. Roloff's performance ranks third best in Zips Indoor history.
On the track, Jake Hiltner notched a top-20 time nationally by finishing the 800-meters in 1:49.63, which was good for seventh place overall and ranks second best in school history, and the Zips 4x400 relay team of Miles Baldwin, Sean Weems, Nick Owens and Mike Ohiembor threatened to break to the program's standard of 3:13.33 with a winning time of 3:13.99.
Rounding out the event winners for the Zips, Alexis Cooks improved on her personal best in the shot put with a toss of 51-05.75, which stands second-best on the Zips top-five list, and Clayton Murphy won the men's mile open with a personal record mark of 4:10.87.
Senior Nick Banke also enjoyed a big night with a personal-record throw of 59-08.25 in the men's shot put for a runner-up finish.
The Zips men's and women's teams will next return home for the annual Akron Invitational. The prestigious two-day event will be held at Stile Athletics Field House from Feb. 7-8.
