Women's Basketball cruises to 100-62 exhibition victory over Ursuline

AKRON, Ohio -- Four players scored in double figures to spark the Akron women's basketball team to a 100-62 exhibition victory past Ursuline College on Saturday at James A. Rhodes Arena.
Playing in her first game in two seasons after missing all of the 2013-14 campaign while undergoing treatment for blood clots, senior Sina King turned in a 19-point, nine-rebound performance to lead the Zips in scoring.
Junior Anita Brown added a 13-point, 13-rebound effort, including pulling down nine offensive rebounds.
Akron also benefitted from 12- and 11-point outputs, respectively, from Katie Nunan and Hannah Plybon.
The Arrows were paced by Madison Schroeder (14 points) and Emma Ricketts (10 points).
Ursuline jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start things off before Akron parlayed back-to-back layups from King and a jumper from freshman point guard Kerri McMahan to square the contest at seven with 15:46 remaining in the opening period.
A layup by Brown at the 14:51 mark put the Zips ahead for good, and began a 19-4 run over the next 5:48 capped by a layup from King with 9:03 left in the first half to give Akron a 26-11 lead.
The Zips extended their advantage to as many as 19 points in the initial stanza before taking a 45-26 lead into the intermission.
Akron connected on 40 percent of its shots in the first 20 minutes, while limiting Ursuline to a 32.4 percent shooting mark. The Zips outrebounded the Arrows by a 29-23 margin, including 11-5 on the offensive glass.
Both sides saw their shooting numbers increase in the second half with Akron firing at a 47.6 percent clip compared to a 34.5 percent shooting mark for Ursuline.
Nunan posted 10 of her 12 points over the final 20 minutes for the Zips.
All 15 of Akron's available players saw action on the day, with 12 registering at least two points. The Zips' bench earned a 42-21 margin in points, while Akron dominated the paint outscoring the Arrows, 54-22 inside.
The Zips forced 27 Ursuline turnovers on the strength of 14 steals en route to converting those turnovers into 28 points.
Akron finished the affair outshooting the Arrows from the field, 43.7 percent to 33.3 percent, while garnering a 53-44 difference on the boards, including 19-10 on the offensive glass. Brown registered a game-high 13 rebounds, while the Zips also benefitted from nine and seven rebounds from King and Nunan.
Akron returns to action to officially open its season next Friday, Nov. 14, when it hosts Binghamton as part of the four-team Akron Classic Rhodes Arena. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
