Akron Continues League Play on the Road
The Zips hit the road for the first time in nearly a month when they head to Bowling Green for a MAC East Division contest Sunday.
News, Notes and Storylines
• Akron's three-game winning streak was halted Thursday night in a 109-83 loss to Central Michigan at Rhodes Arena.
• Despite scoring their season average 83 points, the Zips were held to 40.8 percent shooting from the field. The Chippewas took advantage of the dribble drive, scoring more than half of their points in the paint.
• Rachel Tecca scored a game-high 30 points, and Hanna Luburgh followed with 24 points.
• Kacie Cassell dished out a season-high 11 assists against only one turnover in 29 minutes on the floor.
• The Zips' only win on the road so far this year came at Canisius on Nov. 22. Akron recovered from a 3-point haltime deficit to win 72-56, also the only time this season UA has come back to win after trailing at the half.
• The game against Ball State on Jan. 4 (nine point difference) was the closest game Akron has played in all season. Of UA's 13 games, 12 of them have been decided by 10 or more points.
• A win on Sunday would be Akron's first ever road victory over Bowling Green. The Falcons are 5-0 on their home floor this season.
• Akron boasts the highest team field goal percentage in the MAC at .453, while Bowling Green has allowed its opponents just a .365 clip, the lowest mark in the league.
• Through the first 13 games of the season, the Zips have had six different players score in double figures on two or more occasions, and four of those players have at least one double-double.
• Akron's 2013-14 schedule features contests with eight different opponents that played in postseason tournaments last year, including five conference foes (Ball State, Central Michigan, Bowling Green, Miami, and Toledo).
A Look at Bowling Green
Bowling Green enters Sunday's game with a 12-2 overall record and a 2-0 mark in the MAC after handily defeating Buffalo (62-50) and Kent State (58-39).
The Falcons received six votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll this week and are ranked fourth in the CollegeInsider Mid-Major Top-25.
Three Falcons average in double figures offensively, led by MAC East Player of the Week, Alexis Rogers (12.8 ppg), and followed by Erica Donovan (11.8 ppg) and Jillian Halfhill (11.1 ppg). Rogers leads the conference in field goal percentage at .535. Jill Stein is the team's leading rebounder, averaging 9.4 boards per contest.
As a team, Bowling Green holds its opponents to fewer points than any other team in the MAC, allowing just 55.1 points against. Opposing teams are shooting .365 from the field against BGSU.
Last Time Against Bowling Green
Trailing 37-31 at halftime, Akron was unable to keep pace with Bowling Green in the second half in a 74-61 loss at the Stroh Center on Feb. 20, 2013.
Sina King posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Rachel Tecca added 13 points and seven boards.
Three of BGSU's starters scored in double figured, led by Alexis Rogers with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Central Michigan at Akron Recap
Rachel Tecca poured in a game-high 30 points and Kacie Cassell dished out 11 assists, but MAC West Division powerhouse Central Michigan proved to be too much for Akron in a 109-83 loss.
Tecca was one rebound short of her second-straight double-double, shooting 12-for-21 from the field and adding a 6-for-8 showing from the free throw line. Hanna Luburgh followed that lead, posting 24 points and five rebounds.
Cassell chipped in six points to go with three steals and her season-high 11 dimes, turning the ball over just once in 29 minutes.
Central Michigan placed seven players in double figures offensively, including three double-doubles, led by 21 points and 13 rebounds from Jas'Mine Bracey.
Akron was held to 40.8 percent shooting from the field for the night, against CMU's 54.8 clip.
Record Watch
Rachel Tecca has already become Akron's all-time leading scorer this season, and is on the verge of reaching two more significant milestones. The senior needs just three more rebounds to become UA's all-time leading rebounder - a record that has stood since before she was born (Pam Arnold - 1984-88).
Super Senior Class
The 2013-14 senior class marks the first full recruiting class for recruiting coordinator/Associate Head Coach Melissa Jackson at Akron, and it is a class that has torn down nearly every record that has stood in their way for the past three seasons. The group is just one win away from becoming the winningest class in school history.
NCAA Career Leaders
Kacie Cassell currently ranks sixth in Division I among active career assists leaders with 547 dimes in 107 games. Rachel Tecca ranks ninth among active players in career field goals with 700, despite not falling in the top-10 in career games played. Tecca is on pace to become one of five active players in the country with 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
Spreading the Wealth
Led by the country's top point guard in 2013, Akron has no problem sharing the ball offensively. The Zips claimed the 13th spot in the nation this week in assists, posting 19.3 dimes per game, which is nearly six more than the national average. UA assists on 67 percent of its baskets.
Scoring Threats
Through the first 13 games of the season, senior forward Rachel Tecca is fifth the country in scoring, averaging 24.3 points per game, and Hanna Luburgh is not far behind, ranking seventh with 23.6 ppg. The seniors are also the top-two scorers in the Mid-American Conference.
