LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Akron (0-5) baseball team fell to the University of Louisville (4-1) by a score of 8-0 on Saturday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium in the second game of a three game series.
Freshman John Valek III made the first start of his collegiate career on Saturday. Valek tossed 4.0 innings with four earned runs allowed and four walks issued. The southpaw's record now stands at 0-1 this season.
"I think Valek threw well today. He ended up throwing good pitches, despite a couple miscues behind him. Because of the miscues, Louisville benefited from extra at-bats," Head Coach Rick Rembielak said following Saturday's loss.
Matt LaRocca and Sam Trecaso pitched well coming out of the bullpen following the exit of Valek. LaRocca registered 2.0 innings pitched with one earned run allowed and three strikeouts, while Trecaso threw 1.2 innings with one hit issued.
The Akron offense registered a total of six base hits, two stolen bases, and five walks. Devan Ahart had a strong day at the plate, as the junior tallied two hits, one stolen base and one walk. Gerrad Rohan also had two hits on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Daulton Mosbarger started his third game in a row, and played in left field. Mosbarger saw the ball well this afternoon, as he registered three walks.
"We had a couple more batters have better at-bats… The lineup had better swings in the second game against Louisville," Rembielak said of the offense, "We're working to improve in all phases of the game, and we will continue to work on each aspect going forward."
Akron and Louisville will play the finale of the three game series on Sunday at 1 p.m., in Patterson Stadium. Freshman JT Brubaker is expected to be the starting pitcher.
