Zips Fall in Five Sets to IU Indiy as Ozoh Leads the Way

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- The Akron Zips received a dominant performance from Chidera Ozoh, but fell in a tightly played match on the road against IU Indianapolis, 3-2, by scores of 14-25, 25-16, 22-25, 25-17 and 12-15 at IU Indy Gymnasium on Saturday.

Akron forced the fifth set behind the efficient play of Ozoh as she posted a 0.750 hitting percentage for the match, recording 12 kills on 16 attempts. Ozoh was also stellar on the defensive side of the net, registering seven of the team's 12 total blocks while accounting for 17 total points. Delaney Gash posted a double-double performance, leading the team with 15 kills and adding 11 digs.Vanessa Del Real accounted for a team-high 16 digs.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Zips found themselves in an early hole, dropping a tough first set 25-14. Akron trailed by as many as 11 points as IU Indianapolis never gave up the lead in a set that was notted up just once before the Jaguars took control.
SET 2 | Akron responded to pick up a 25-16 victory in set two, evening the match at one set apiece. The Zips grabbed the set thanks to a strong showing on the attacking side. Akron registered a .308 attack percentage with 10 kills in the set win. The Zips ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza. The Akron offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza.
SET 3 | IU Indianapolis responded to win set number three, putting Akron in a two sets to one hole. The Zips came up short by the score of 25-22. IU Indianapolis grabbed the advantage for good at 22-21 in a set that was tied up four times before the Jaguars took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 4 | Akron then responded to secure set four 25-17 to force a fifth set. A strong performance on the attacking side led the Zips to victory in the set. Akron put together a .360 attack percentage with 13 kills in the set win. The Zips ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza. Akron got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four IU Indianapolis attacks in the stanza.
SET 5 | Akron was on the wrong side of a back-and-forth match, winning the second and fourth sets, but losing the first, third and fifth, which they dropped by the score of 15-12, to fall in the match. The Zips dropped set five despite a strong performance on the attacking end. Akron put together a .304 attack percentage with nine kills in the set loss.
How It Happened
The Zips will be back in action at James A. Rhodes Arena for the first time in 2026 as they host the Zips Invitational on Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 10-12 against Cleveland State and Valparaiso.
