TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The No. 15 University of Akron rifle team walked away from their final competition of 2013 calendar year with a 4581-4385 victory over Rose Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday.
Senior Victoria Brown and sophomore Tim Hopkins took control of the match, with Hopkins earning top gun in smallbore and Brown taking the top spot in air rifle.
"I am very proud of both Brown and Hopkins as they really put a lot of effort into leading this team every day," states coach Newt Engle, "If anyone deserves to be on the top of the winner's board, it is these two."
As the traveling team was in Indiana, the remainder of the Zips squad fired a home match in Akron. Freshman Zachary Strohl managed to tie his personal best air rifle score (587), while teammate sophomore Megan Pemberton shattered her personal best (577) air rifle with a very impressive 583. Freshman Connor O'Mara also set a new high smallbore mark of 560.
Coming back from break early, Akron will train for the first match of the second half of the season, which will take place Jan. 26 at the 15th annual Palmyra Invitational rifle tournament in Palmyra, Pa.
