AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's basketball program and eighth year head coach Jodi Kest officially announced the 2013-14 promotional schedule as well as its "Breakthroo" theme for the upcoming season.
The Zips are set to embark on another breakthrough season after setting more than 10 new school records last year, capturing their first ever Mid-American Conference East Division title and making just their second appearance in the WNIT.
Akron's hunt for continued success has sparked the creation of the "Breakthroo" campaign. Fans are encouraged to use the hashtag #Breakthroo when posting about the Zips on social media throughout the season.
The entire women's basketball promotional schedule can be viewed online. Highlights of the schedule include Education Day on Tuesday, Nov. 12 when the Zips host Tennessee Tech in non-conference action at a special 10:30 a.m. tipoff time. Fifth-grade students in the Akron area will be provided with special programming and admitted to the game for free.
Akron's contest against Rochester College on Friday, Dec. 20, will be a "We Back Pat" game to support the Pat Summitt Foundation and the former women's basketball head coach at Tennessee.
The weekend of February 8 is Alumni Weekend for the women's basketball program when the Zips host Western Michigan. It will also be UA's Play 4 Kay game - the team will wear pink uniforms and there will be several giveaways and promotions related to breast cancer research.
UA's final home game of the regular season on March 8 against Bowling Green will be Senior Night. The Zips' six seniors, Kacie Cassell, Cari Guyton, Sina King, Hanna Luburgh, Rachel Tecca and Carly Young, will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony.
New and renewed season tickets for women's basketball are $55. UA faculty and staff may purchase season tickets for $45 with their ID card. The family season package for $99 includes two adult tickets and two youth tickets (ages 3-14). Fans can add a women's basketball season ticket package to their men's package for the price of $30 for an adult or $50 for a family package.
The women's program will play host to Lake Erie in its only exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 12:00 noon. The Zips officially kick off the regular season on Friday, Nov. 8 in a women's/men's doubleheader at Rhodes Arena. The women will take the court against Florida Atlantic beginning at 5:30 p.m. The first 500 fans will be given replica banners to commemorate Akron's 2013 MAC East Division championship.
