Agnew and Brown Lead Zips in Withrow Invitational
January 19 | Rifle
MURRAY, Ky. – The University of Akron rifle team traveled to Murray State University on Saturday, Jan. 19, to compete in the Withrow Invitational. The Akron marksmen finished with a respectable score of 2268 in small bore and a season-high score of 2308 in air rifle.
Freshman Alan Agnew lit up the scoreboard again, as he fired a competition best and his new collegiate-high in small bore with a score of 575. Agnew was followed second and third in the small bore by his teammates Tim Hopkins (570) and Victoria Brown (567).
"Alan has been doing a great job and I am pleased to see him rewarded with some impressive scores", states coach Newt Engle.
Brown tied her collegiate record in the air rifle event with a remarkable score of 586 out of 600 possible points, while Agnew followed in second place with a score of 584.
"Scores like these are exactly what we need this time of the season," states Engle, "Now if we can get a couple of other consistent 580 shooters we will be right where we need to be."
Coach Engle was also pleased with the non-traveling team members, who fired a match at home this same weekend. When coach Engle takes the two, five-person traveling teams on away matches, the remaining team members fire a match on the Akron home range. Freshman Eric Petty and Tori Templeton had exceptionally good performances with both rifles at this match.
This was the first time UA has traveled to compete at the home of the Murray State Racers. The two-weekend competition is a big event in the Olympic rifle realm as many of the nation's best collegiate and junior teams arrive for this shoulder-to-shoulder competition.
Next weekend the team will jump on the bus to Boston to compete in the Bean Pot Invitational held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The match is scheduled to include seven other east coast teams and run both Friday and Saturday.
