Women's Golf Finish Top-Five Nationally in Team GPA
July 18 | Women's Golf
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – The National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) announced that The University of Akron's women's golf team finished fourth in the country in overall team GPA, the program's first top-five finish.
The Zips finished the 2011-12 season with a 3.766 overall team GPA, improving on its 3.697 GPA from the 2010-11 season. Last year, Akron finished a then program-best tied for tenth place nationally, sharing the top-10 honor with Gustavus Adolphus College. Lee University earned its second-consecutive NGCA All-Scholar Team GPA Award, posting a 3.965 grade-point average.
"I am extremely proud of this latest team academic accomplishment," women's golf head coach Jenny King said. "Each player on our team put in many hours of hard work to make this happen. To be recognized nationally for their hard work in the classroom is a testament to the sacrifices they have made to be well rounded student-athletes."
The All-Scholar Team award recognizes the women's collegiate golf program with the highest collective average team GPA that includes all of the team's student-athletes for the 2011-12 season.
The team honor comes nearly two weeks after three Zips, Amanda Butler, Sara Chaves and Laura Murray, were named to the NGCA 2011-12 Division I All-American Scholar team. The honor was the fourth-consecutive for Butler, the first four-time recipient in program history. Chaves and Murray appeared on the list for the first time in their collegiate careers.
Akron was the only Mid-American Conference program to appear on the 2011-12 list.
The NGCA, founded in 1983, is a non-profit organization representing women's collegiate golf coaches. The NGCA was formed to encourage the playing of college golf for women in correlation with a general objective of education and in accordance with the highest tradition of intercollegiate competition. Today, the NGCA represents over 550 coaches throughout the U.S. and is dedicated to educating, promoting and recognizing both its members and the student-athletes they represent.
