Softball Concludes Road Trip with 10-0 Loss at Central Michigan

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. – The Akron softball team concluded its road trip to Michigan road trip with a 10-0 loss in five innings to Central Michigan in Mid-American Conference play on Sunday.
The Zips (20-29-1, 4-14 MAC) were held to five his and committed two errors in the game. Allison Dorr and Kellie Roudabush lead the way with 1-for-2 performances at the plate, each smacking a double.
Brittany Maurer (16-22) was credited with the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) on four hits and striking out two in 2.1 innings pitched. Andrea Arney allowed four earned runs on five hits and also struck out two in 2.1 innings inside the circle.
The Zips were not able to capitalize on one-out hits in both the first and second innings as Alex Helfrich singled in the first and Roudabush doubled in the second. Roudabush would advance to third on a passed ball, but would be left on base.
CMU (24-25, 9-10 MAC) broke the game open in the bottom of the second inning with a four-spot to take a 4-0 lead. CMU finished the inning with two hits and were helped on the pads by two Akron errors.
Akron had a third chance in the top of the third to plate a run, with Keelia Nester reaching third base after reaching on a fielder's choice and advancing on a sac bunt and a passed ball. But, with two outs, Alissa Birkhimer would fly out to end the threat.
The Chippewas would add two runs in the bottom of the third for a 6-0 lead before the Zips tried again to get back into the game. Dorr led the fourth inning off with a double and was pinch ran for by Alexa Montesano. Montesano would advance to third on a fly ball, but would be thrown out at home on the next play on Roudabush's fielder's choice.
After CMU added a run in the fourth and held UA to a two-out single in the top of the firth, the Chippewas ended the game with a three-run, two-out homer for the 10-0 win.
The Zips return home for the final weekend of the regular season when they play host to Kent State on Friday, May 4, in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. ET. The series will be part of the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge in which a full point will be up for grabs. Akron will concluded the weekend with games on Saturday and Sunday against Buffalo.
