April 28 | Softball
MT. PLEASANT, Mich. – The Akron softball team dropped game one of a two-game Mid-American Conference series at Central Michigan, falling 6-1 on Saturday.
The Zips (20-28, 4-13 MAC) committed five errors in the game en route to falling to 1-2 on the road trip. Kellie Roudabush drove in the only run for Akron on the day, a solo shot in the top of the seventh inning, as part of her 1-for-3 performance at the plate.
CMU (23-25, 8-10 MAC) allowed just one UA batter to reach base through the first four innings while building a 4-0 lead. The Chippewas scored a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings on four hits and three Akron errors.
The Zips looked to get on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Allison Dorr reached second on a one-out double. Iesha Mountain entered the game as a courtesy runner and advanced to third when Roudabush reached on an error. Several pitches later, Roudabush would be standing on second after her 11th stolen base of the season. However, Brittany Maurer would line out to the shortstop and Taryn Allmon would fly out to right to end the inning.
After CMU added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-0 lead, Roudabush would send a two-out pitch over the wall in left-center for her second homer of the season.
Maurer (16-21) was tabbed for the loss, allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits and striking out one in five innings pitched. Alissa Birkhimer pitched one inning of relief, allowing one run on one hit and striking out one.
Akron Central Michigan will conclude the series tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. ET. Fans unable to attend the games can follow all the action by visiting the softball schedule page on GoZips.com and clicking on the "Live Stats" link next to each game.
