March 31 | Softball
AKRON, Ohio – A three-run rally in the top of the sixth inning sparked Bowling Green's 4-0 win over Akron in a Mid-American Conference softball contest on Saturday afternoon at Lee R. Jackson Softball Field.
Bowling Green (17-11, 2-1 MAC) scored what proved to be its game-winning run with two outs in the top of the six when a single by Andrea Arney brought in Hannah Fulk from third. The Falcons rallied from that point as their next batter, Katie Yoho, walked on to put runners on first and second, and a single to right field by Shelby Fink brought in both Arney and Yoho to give the squad a 3-0 advantage.
BGSU posted another insurance run in the top of the seventh when Fulk hit a solo home run to left field.
Jamie Kertes earned the win for Bowling Green and improved to 8-6 in the circle this season. She struck out seven, walked zero and allowed four hits in 7.0 innings.
Akron (11-17-1, 0-3 MAC) pitcher Brittany Maurer dropped her record to 10-14. She had eight strikeouts and two walks, and allowed three runs and five hits in 6.0 innings. Alissa Birkhimer went 1.0 innings in relief of Maurer, giving up BGSU's seventh inning homer.
The Zips recognized their five-person senior class of Andrea Arney, Allison Dorr, Alex Helfrich, Crystal Hernandez and Amanda Ricker prior to today's game.
Akron closes out its two-game series with Bowling Green on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
