AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron softball head coach Julie Jones has announced that Savannah Fruin (Delray Beach, Fla.) and Alyssa Nicholas (Cortland, Ohio) have signed national letters of intent to join the program for the 2014 season.
"We are very pleased to add Savannah and Alyssa to our solid group of student-athletes," said Jones. "We have had a streak of great recruiting classes over the past several years, and this one is no different. These two players bring strong offensive skills and versatility on defense."
Fruin, a middle infielder out of Spanish River High School in Boca Raton, Fla., hit .573 as a junior in 2012 with 15 RBI and four home runs. She is a two-time All-Conference and All-County selection, including first team honors last season. Fruin has also spent the last four years playing for some of the state's prestigious travel softball programs, knocking out 13 home runs and stealing 22 bases in 34 games for Florida's Gators Gold-Flannery this fall.
A successful multi-sport athlete, Fruin was named the Most Valuable Player of the volleyball team the day before she committed to play softball at Akron.
"We are so excited to add Savannah to our young infielders group," Jones said. "She has the perfect size, speed and skill set to become one of the top infielders in the Mid-American Conference. She runs well, has a great arm and covers ground very quickly. She will also add a big stick to our offense along with very good speed on the bases."
Nicholas, a catcher/third baseman from Lakeview High School, has been named First Team All-Conference in each of her first three prep seasons, and earned MVP status for the last two. She carried a batting average of over .380 every year, including hitting .545 as a junior with nine home runs and 25 RBI. Last season Nicholas also boasted an on-base percentage of .595 with 10 stolen bases.
"Adding to our pool of solid in-state talent, Alyssa will help immensely with our depth behind the plate, while bringing a strong bat to our offensive lineup," Jones stated. "Alyssa can also play third base which will help with depth in the infield as well. Her outgoing personality will help make her successful as a catcher, bringing an upbeat and positive attitude to the program."
The Zips are scheduled to open the 2013 campaign on the road at the Georgia Southern Tournament, February 9-10.
