Zippy's Top 10 Countdown: No. 6
July 15 | Women's Golf
Happy Friday Zips Fans!
To close out the first week of my "Year in Roo-View Countdown," I give you the No. 6 story of the 2010-11 season...the women's golf team and its first team title in program history at the Third Annual Zippy Invitational last October.
In June 2007, The University of Akron announced that it would add women's golf to its list of varsity programs. In September 2008, the program took off, recording nine top-10 finishes, including three runner-up results. In 2009-10, the Zips added seven more top-three finishes. Then on Oct. 12, 2010, Akron broke through for the program's first team title.
Led by a group of juniors, including Kristen Hill, Amanda Butler, Katie Jenior and Hanna Ek, the Zips grabbed the lead early during day one of the invitational, holding a dominating 14-stroke lead after two rounds.
Tuesday morning brought butterflies to my stomach, as I knew the ladies were on the verge of something special.
Conditions were tough for the final round, but the ladies held on to win by four strokes. Kristen Hill led the charge, finishing in second place, missing out on her fourth-career victory by just one stroke.
I was so excited to see the girls win the team title. Along with junior Tyler Etcheberry, these five have worked so hard to help build the women's golf program at Akron. I cannot wait until Oct. 17 when the Zips defend their title at the Fourth Annual Zippy Invitational.
With the beautiful weekend ahead, I hope to get out on the course and play a round before resuming the countdown on Monday. Don't forget to visit GoZips.com next week to see what I have in store for you for the top five story in my countdown!
