November 05 | Rifle
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron rifle team broke the school smallbore record for the second time this season Saturday, as the Zips outpaced visiting University of the Sciences (Pa.) and Indiana (Pa.) at Pinn Rifle Range.
Led by sophomore Victoria Brown and freshman John Hupp, Akron tallied a total of 4609 to easily win the meet over University of the Sciences's and Indiana's scores of 4215 and 3620. The Zips moved up to 12th in the CRCA national rankings with the result.
"Having the last couple of weeks to get ready obviously was put to good use by the team," UA coach Newt Engle said. "As a team we knew we needed to improve in smallbore, and that is exactly what we are doing."
In the record-breaking day with the smallbores, the Zips beat the old school mark by five points with an outstanding 2284. Hupp led the way with a second place, and personal best effort, of 576. Brown was just one point back with a 575, also a personal best. Junior Adam Auclair also set a record in the event, scoring a 196-10 from the kneeling position to break the previous record of 196-9 set in 2006 by Julie DeBritta.
A trio of Zips dominated the air rifle event. Junior Nicole Dietrich, Brown, and senior Austin Litherland all totaled a score of 584 in the event , with Dietrich taking first on the tiebreaker. Senior Ryan Stein placed fourth with a score of 582, giving Akron a team score of 2325.
Akron is back in action on Nov. 20 when it travels to Morehead State for its final meet of 2011.
