Trio of Zips Earn Academic All-MAC Honors

Three members of The University of Akron cross country team were
named to the 2010 All-Mid-American Conference Academic Team, the
league office announced Monday.
Headlining the list for the Zips was senior Kim Lorentz, who was named to the league's
academic for the third consecutive season. The native of Mayfield,
Ohio, maintains a 3.96 grade-point-average as a biology major at
UA. Lorentz led the Zips at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional
Championship, posting a time of 21:30.21 to finish 28th in the
231-runner field, and was UA's top finisher at the MAC Championship
with a 16th-place time of 21:34.0.
A pair of juniors represented the Zips on the men's side as Gus
Dudek and Andy
Knapp each were recognized for the first time.
Dudek, a native of Green, Ohio, posted a 3.83 GPA as a mathematics
major at UA. He represented Akron at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional
Championship this season, finishing with a time of 32:27.60 after
crossing the line with a time of 25:34.40 - good for 26th place -
at the MAC Championship. Knapp, who hails from Shelby, Ohio,
carries a GPA o 3.50 as a general studies major. He also competed
at the Great Lakes Regional Championship, posting a time of
33:01.59. He was named to the All-MAC Team in 2010 after posting a
10th-place finish (25:05.3) at the MAC Championships.
The Academic All-MAC honor is voted on by faculty athletic
representatives at MAC institutions and is given to
student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To
qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA
and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for
that particular sport.
First-year students and junior college transfers in their first
year of residence are not eligible for the award.
