Baseball Lands Two on 2010 Academic All-MAC Team

AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron seniors Kevin
Haas and John Turk have been named to
the 17-man Academic All-Mid-American Conference Baseball Team, the
league office announced Tuesday.
The select group was voted on by the league's Faculty Athletic
Representatives from among a list of student-athletes who have
excelled in athletic and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete
must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in
at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
Haas, who owns a 3.634 cumulative GPA as a marketing management
major at UA, started all 55 games for the Zips this past spring.
The infielder, who was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-District team for the second straight season, became
the school's all-time hits leader this year with 278 knocks for his
four-year career.
Overall, the native of North Olmstead, Ohio and St. Ignatius
High School product finished 2010 with a .327 batting average, 17
doubles, three home runs and 33 RBI in 251 at-bats. His 210 assists
on the season paced the league and he finished third on the club
with 24 multiple-hit games, including five 3-hit and two 4-hit
performances.
Turk, who owns a 3.568 cumulative GPA as a psychology major,
appeared in 52 games for UA last spring, starting 51. As the team's
primary catcher (47 starts behind the plate) Turk was named to the
All-MAC Second Team after leading all MAC backstops with a
career-high .350 batting average. His 71 hits on the campaign were
also a personal best and second among league catchers.
Turk was one of 53 players nationwide to be named to the Johnny
Bench Award Watch List, which is presented to the nation's top
collegiate catcher last March and was named MAC East Division
Player of the Week on Mar. 29 after batting .500 with a .571
slugging percentage and six RBI to help UA take a three-game series
at Western Michigan. The native of Kirtland, Ohio and product of
Kirtland High School, notched 21 multiple-hit games and five
multiple-RBI games on the year.
First-year students and junior college transfers in their first
year of residence were not eligible for the Academic All-MAC
Baseball Team award.
