Four Zips Record Multiple Hits in 4-3 Win Over NIU

AKRON, Ohio - The Akron baseball team saw four players record multiple hits, while four pitchers combined to pick up a 4-3 win to conclude the series with NIU on Sunday.
Brady Bowen picked up three hits in four trips to the plate, while adding a stolen base and a run. Blake Bowen went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two walks, an RBI and a run. Tucker Biehl and Kelton Phillips both recorded two hits each in the win. Brennan Morgan drove in two runs on one hit while walking once as well.
Landon Vandegrift (2-1) got the win out of the bullpen for Akron (17-23, 7-14). The right-hander went 2.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits. Carter Beck started the game, going 2.2 innings with two hits, one run, four strikeouts and four walks. Trieg Matthews also pitched well, going 2.2 innings, surrendering one run on one hit, walking none and striking out three. Floyd McKenna closed out the game, allowing no runs or hits to pick up his fourth save of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips were trailing 1-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Akron scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Morgan.
The Huskies then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 3-2 until the Zips expanded their advantage in the sixth. Akron scored a run when Blake Bowen drew a walk from John Lyman that scored Tucker Biehl, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Zips. Northern Illinois put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Akron still held on for the 4-3 win.
