Softball Splits To Open Buzz Classic
March 06 | Softball
Woodstock, Ga. - The University of Akron softball team split Friday during the opening day of the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic.
After sophomore Andrea Arney pitched a 4-0
shutout against the University of North Carolina Greensboro to
start the day the Zips had opportunities in the second match-up
against Western Kentucky but fell 4-3 to close out the day.
Arney pitched a one hit contest against UNCG walking only two to
move to 3-1 on the season. In 29.0 innings pitched thus far this
season, Arney has a 0.72 earned run average.
Offensively, senior Krista Hansen drew a walk
to lead off and a sacrifice bunt and two singles put Akron on the
board early (1-0).
Adding two in the second, junior Sarah Stromack got the
action started leading off with a single. Fellow junior Sarah
Earley would reach on an error which allowed Stromack to cross
home plate and a single by junior Alex Feltes drove in Earley
for the 3-0 lead.
Akron's fourth and final run came in the fifth inning when junior
Heather Bauer would single
and score off a base hit by sophomore Crystal Hernandez.
In the contest, Feltes had her first three-hit game of the season.
UNCG's only hit would come off a single in the fourth inning.
Late in the afternoon, Akron faced off against WKU and like the
first contest put up runs early when Hansen led off the first
inning with a triple to center field. A sacrifice fly by Feltes
pushed her home for the quick 1-0 lead.
Akron added two more in the third when Earley led off with a walk.
Feltes would single and both would put themselves in scoring
position for junior Monica Shorter to drive them
home off a single to left field.
WKU would not let the Zips get comfortable as a walk would start
off the Hilltoppers portion of the third. A single and a double
would drive in two runs a Zips error would tie the contest at
three.
Western Kentucky added another run in the fourth and down, 4-3, the
Zips would put themselves in position to tie it back up but to no
avail as good defense and scattered hits gave WKU the win.
Akron will continue play at the Classic Saturday taking on Liberty
and North Florida at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Live stats against
the Liberty Flames will be available here.
