Zips Cruise Past Arrows, 102-45

- With their largest offensive output since 1983, the Akron women's basketball team rolled over Ursuline College 102-45 on Sunday at Rhodes Arena. Every available Zip saw action in the lopsided affair, allowing several players to have career days in UA's third-straight victory. With the win, Akron improves to 7-4, while the Arrows fall to 3-10.
Sophomore forward Rachel Tecca led all players with 14 points, while freshman Sina King recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 boards for the Zips. Ursuline was carried by freshman center Jaylene Taylor, who notched 13 points and seven rebounds.
The Zips jumped out to an early 16-4 lead with a balanced attack behind five different scorers. Freshman Brianna Moyes, making only her fifth appearance of the season, came in early to share duties at the point with freshman Kacie Cassell. Moyes immediately made an impact by knocking down two three-pointers and finished with a career-best six points and four assists. Also getting early minutes was sophomore Katie Bubna, marking her third appearance this season. She tallied a career-high eight points and three steals.
UA controlled the run of play throughout and used frequent substitutions to keep fresh legs on the floor. Ursuline was plagued by turnovers in the first half, mostly for traveling, that prevented it from maintaining possession and making a dent in the Akron lead.
At the half, Akron led 51-28, the Zips' largest first-half output of the season and the most under head coach Jodi Kest. Tecca led all players with 12 points, while the Arrows were paced by Taylor with nine. Ursuline held the advantage in field goal percentage in the opening period, shooting 50 percent to Akron's 45 percent, while the Zips held the edge on the boards, out-rebounding the Arrows 20-17.
The second half saw more domination from Akron, as the Zips allowed only 17 points. For the game, UA forced a season-high 34 turnovers and committed a season-low seven giveaways. The Zips shot 38-of-81 (.469) from the floor and grabbed 42 boards and 17 steals. They also turned in the second-best performance from the charity stripe this season, going 18-of-24 (.750) from the line.
In a true team effort, Akron's Moyes (6), King (12), Hanna Luburgh (11), Denver McLean (5), and Bubna (8) all recorded a career-high in scoring. Sophomore Ti-eshia Stubbs also chipped in 11 points, while senior Kara Murphy added nine in her 104th consecutive start.
The Zips will take a short break for the holidays and return home to Rhodes Arena on Tuesday, Dec. 28th for a 7 p.m. ET match-up with Providence College.
