Zips Shutout Over Ohio Marks Most Wins of Decade
May 02 | Softball
The University of Akron softball team (32-21, 11-9 MAC)
picked up its 32nd win Saturday, marking the most wins of the past
decade, in the Zips 3-0 win over the Ohio Bobcats.
Freshman Andrea Arney picked up her 16th win and fourth
shutout on the mound for UA holding the Bobcats to two scattered
hits.
A scoreless game until the fifth inning, the Zips threatened to
score in the bottom of the third when they loaded the bases off a
fielder's choice and two base hits, however, a pop-up to second
base kept the game 0-0.
Ohio put two on in the top of the fourth inning starting when the
lead-off hitter led off with a base hit to right center field. A
hit by pitch would put runners at first and second but a ground out
kept the game scoreless.
The only runs of the day would come from UA in the bottom of the
fifth inning when they scored three runs on two hits. The action
started when sophomore Sarah Stromack reached first after she was
hit by a pitch. A four-pitch walk to senior Julie
Boyes put runners at second and third and fellow senior Cali
Stratton would step in with her second hit of the game, a RBI
double barely inside the left field line to score Stromack giving
UA the 1-0 advantage.
After an OU pitching change sophomore Alex
Feltes would step to the plate and would drive in pinch runner
senior Jaci Brindus off a sacrifice bunt to the OU
pitcher to put UA up 2-0. Junior Krista
Hansen drove in the last run with a RBI single to center field
to give the Zips the 3-0 win and their 11th shutout of the
season.
Akron will wrap up the regular-season Sunday with the recognition
of its five seniors and another contest against Ohio. The first
pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. Live scoring will be available here.
