Softball Remains Undefeated At Home With 3-2 Win
April 05 | Softball
AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron softball
team (21-13, 4-3 MAC) closed out its home stand Sunday beating
Eastern Michigan 3-2 to remain undefeated at home. Scoring a lone
run in the first, fourth and sixth innings the win moves Akron to
6-0 at Lee R. Jackson Field.
The victory also marked freshman Andrea
Arney's (11-8) third straight conference win on the mound.
Combined through the weekend Arney posted a 2.33 earned run average
in 21.0 innings pitched against Central Michigan and two contests
versus EMU.
A close one until the end, Eastern Michigan threatened to tie the
contest in the seventh after they scored two (3-2) when they posted
three consecutive hits starting when the lead off hitter laid down
a single. A follow-up double to left center scored the runner and
another single brought the Eagles second run home, however, great
defense from Akron's Alex Feltes (Rocky River, Ohio/Magnificat)
saved the Zips as she caught a line drive and then picked off the
runner at first for Akron's sixth double play of the season to
secure the Zips 3-2 win.
Akron, undefeated when scoring in the first inning, put its first
run on the board starting when senior Lisa
McLean (Canton, Ohio/Perry) led off the inning with a single to
right center field. Her 29th stolen base on the year put her in
scoring position and a sacrifice bunt advanced her at third. She
beat out the play to score when senior Julie
Boyes (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) hit a slow ground ball to the EMU
shortstop (1-0).
In the fourth inning, senior Cali
Stratton (Liberty, Mo./Liberty) led off with her first home run
of the season belting it over the left field fence on the first
pitch for a 2-0 Akron advantage.
The Zips added their last run in the sixth inning starting when
lead off batter Boyes reached first with a single. Fellow senior Jaci
Brindus (Canton, Ohio/Glenoak) came in to pinch run for Boyes
and would score after a sacrifice bunt advanced her third coming
home off a single by junior Krista
Hansen (Arlington, Wash./Arlington).
Akron will take a break from conference action on Tuesday, April 7
and travel to Niagara Falls, N.Y. to face Niagara University in a
double header. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
