March 13 | Softball
AKRON, Ohio - Heading to the Kissimmee, Fla., the University of Akron softball team will play its last tournament of the year next week at the Rebel Spring Games.
The Zips will play two games a day, facing face Florida A &
M, Manhattan, Lafayette, Army, Fairleigh Dickinson, Wisconsin-Green
Bay, Rider and Hartford. Akron had its longest winning streak of
the 2008 season last year at the Rebel Spring Games dropping the
first contest against Cornell (0-8) but winning the next four.
UA is coming off a 3-2 record at the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic (March 6-8) where the Zips got outstanding performances from senior Julie Boyes and sophomore Heather Bauer, earning each Mid-American Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week honors (period ending March 8) for the first time in their careers.
Boyes (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake), arguably one of best power hitters
in the league, posted a .786 slugging percentage and belted out two
home runs, her second and third of the season. Her best performance
of the tournament came in the Zips 4-1 win over Kennesaw State
where she went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI. Over five games,
Boyes had five hits, three RBI and two runs for Akron in 14 at
bats. On the season, Boyes is batting a .327 and has posted 16
hits. She leads the Zips in RBI with 10.
Bauer (Medina, Ohio/Highland), a first year transfer, allowed only one earned run in 14.1 innings pitched. In the Zips 5-0 win against Florida A & M, Bauer threw her third shutout of the season allowing only four hits and one walk while striking out six. Versus Kennesaw State, Bauer allowed just one earned run striking out six batters. Her dominating performance earned her all-tournament team honors for the first time in her career. On the season, Bauer holds a team-low 1.22 ERA.
It was the third time this season an Akron player has been named Player of the Week. Senior Lisa McLean (Canton, Ohio/Perry) received the honor for the period ending Feb. 8, and fellow senior Amber Lowe (Carrollton, Ohio/Carrollton) received the honor the following week (Feb. 15). The Pitcher of the Week honor was the first of the season.
