Softball Tops Pennsylvania in Five Innings
February 28 | Softball
Fairfax, Va. - Sophomore Heather
Bauer (Medina, Ohio/Highland) threw a no-hitter in the Zips,
9-0, five-inning win over the University of Pennsylvania Friday at
the Patriot Classic. Now 3-3 on the season, Bauer faced 16 batters,
striking out eight and walking just one in her third complete game
of the season.
The offensive action started for Akron (5-6) in the first inning when the Zips scored three runs off three hits. Senior Lisa McLean (Canton, Ohio/Perry) got the action started with a single to second base and after stealing second and third came home off senior Julie Boyes (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) ground out to second base. Sophomore Alex Feltes (Rocky River, Ohio/Magnificat) continued the action with a walk scoring when sophomore Monica Shorter (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) singled through the left side for her first RBI of the season. The third run came when junior Krista Hansen (Arlington, Wash./Arlington) reached base on a single and was caught stealing at second allowing Shorter to score.
The Zips added two more runs in the second inning when freshman
Allison Dorr (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro),
starting her first game of the season at catcher, walked. Sophomore
Sarah Earley reached on a fielder's choice and
Dorr advanced to second on a fielding error by Pennsylvania. McLean
would step up laying down a sacrifice advancing the runners to
second and third. Both would score when senior Amber
Lowe (Carrollton, Ohio/Carrollton) laided down her second
triple of the season.
Refusing to allow any chance for Pennsylvania to come back, UA added one more run in the fourth inning following by three in the fifth. In the fourth, Dorr would hit her first double as a Zip, advancing to third off a groundout coming home when McLean singled to right field.
In the fifth, Boyes would get the Zips final scoring push
started with a single. Freshman Alex
Helfrich (Grafton, Ohio/Magnificat) would step in to pinch run
for Boyes reaching second on a wild pitch. Feltes would follow with
a walk and Shorter would reach off a fielding error that sent
Helfrich home. Hansen would load the bases when she drew a walk and
senior Cali Stratton (Liberty, Mo./Liberty) would step
in to pinch hit for freshman Crystal
Hernandez (Sylmar, Calif./Sylmar) laying down a single driving
Shorter and Feltes home (9-0).
In the first contest of the day, Akron lost 2-1 to tournament
host George Mason with freshman Andrea
Arney (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton) taking the loss despite giving up
just three hits and only one earned run.
Down 2-0, Akron threatened in the seventh inning starting when
Hansen led off the inning with a double. Hernandez followed with a
single and Helfrich would come into pinch run advancing to second
on a wild pitch. The Zips would score their only run when Earley
reached base on a throwing error. Arney moves to 2-3 on the
year.
The Zips will face Cornell Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Akron fell to
Cornell 8-0 last season in the Rebel Spring Games (March 19).
