November 24 | Women's Basketball
University of Akron junior Kara Murphy has been named
Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week, the
league office announced.
Murphy turned in one of her most complete performances in an Akron
uniform with 28 points, five rebounds and five assists in a setback
at Robert Morris last week. The All-MAC First Teamer connected on
10-of-17 attempts from the floor while matching a career high with
five threes.
In doing so, Murphy, who is the youngest player in the history of
the program to record 1,000 career points, moved into sixth place
on the school's all-time scoring list. For the week, Murphy
averaged 18.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists.
With 1,086 points, Murphy now trails Toreeda Turner (1982-85) by 75
points for fifth place. Cheryl Bowles (1998-01) is the school's
all-time leading scorer with 1,712 points. It is the third time
Murphy has received weekly honors from the league for her
career.
The Zips will next head to the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament in Ft.
Myers, Fla., this weekend. UA will face Rider Friday and Tulsa
Saturday. Both game will start at 5 p.m. (EST).
