Reinking Sets School Mark as Rifle Rolls Past PSU
February 14 | Rifle
(Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) set a school record in the
smallbore to lead the University of Akron rifle team to a
4,532-4,355 victory over Penn State this past weekend. The Zips
(10-3) entered the week ranked 14th in the nation.
Reinking set the new standard with a score of 580 out of a possible
600 as the Zips took the top three slots in the smallbore. Junior
Julie
DeBrita (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia Glenville) took second with a 566
while freshman Bob Belko (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence Central)
captured third with a 562. Belko fired perfect 100 scores twice in
the event.
"The really exciting thing is Bob is just beginning to realize what
he is capable of accomplishing." said UA head coach Newt
Engle, "We are showing progress in our smallbore performance
which is exactly what we need at this time."
Akron was even more dominating in the air rifle division as UA
claimed the top seven positions.
Freshman Rebecca Gerevics (Darien Center, N.Y./Alden
Central) staved off flu-like symptoms and finished one point shy of
setting a school record with an outstanding score of 587 to bring
home top honors. Reinking added to her record-setting day by taking
the second slot with a score of 574. Teammates Michael
Tokarz (Lewisburg, W.Va./Greenbrier East) and Belko followed
with with 570's while Brittany Jones (St. Petersburg, Fla./St.
Petersburg) and Josh Fabijance (Niles, Ohio/Niles McKinley)
checked in with scores of 569 and 557, respectively.
"I am very impressed with the effort Beca put into this match,"
Engle said. "Beca and the rest of the team are really showing they
have what it takes to be champions."
The rifle team will next travel to Columbus, Ohio this weekend for
the NCAA qualifier. This match, along with the rest of the
qualifier matches being fired across the nation, will determine
which eight teams will be invited to the NCAA championships in
March. The qualifier will begin at 10 a.m.
