Zips Go In Full Gear
August 10 | Football
AKRON Day five of Akron's 2007 preseason football camp saw the Zips take to Schrank Field in full pads for the three-hour session. While the area experienced heavy rain late Thursday and early Friday, the team was able to practice outdoors the entire time as the weather cleared as the team took to the field.
"I thought we were a little sloppy at times today," said head coach J.D. Brookhart. "We did have a tough conditioning session (Thursday) and it was the first day wearing all the gear. However, we can not let those things affect us. We only have a set number of practices and can not afford to let an opportunity to get better slip away. I did see some things on both sides of the ball which were positive. We just need to make sure we are more consistent and have great tempo from start to finish."
With the team donning full gear for the first time, a lot of the individual drills focused on blocking and tackling. When the squad came together for the first 11-on-11 period, the defense drew first blood when Rodney Etienne delivered a big hit, forcing a fumble which Ray Siler scooped up.
The offense was able to respond. In addition to running back Alex Allen continuing to make plays, Dennis Kennedy made a highlight-reel run. Taking a short middle pass in the middle of the field, Kennedy set up his blocks, worked his way down field and used his strength at the end for a 70-yard score.
Practice ended with a red-zone period. The offense was able to get into the endzone a couple of times, namely another hard-nosed run by Kennedy. However, one of the better plays came as practice drew to a close when Brandon Anderson was able to tip a pass in the endzone, allowing Andre Jones to come up with the interception.
The Zips will have their first two-a-day session on Saturday. On Sunday (Aug. 12), Akron fans will have the opportunity to have a meal with the team as well as have an autograph session at the annual "Meet the Team" day.
