Akron, Ohio State Face Off Wednesday
May 01 | Softball
The University of Akron softball team will play its final
nonconference game of the 2007 season on Wednesday night as it
plays host to the Ohio State Buckeyes at Lee Jackson Field. First
pitch is set for 5 p.m., and admission is free.
Akron (16-21, 7-7 MAC) is coming off a productive weekend of
Mid-American Conference play, picking up victories at Western
Michigan and DeKalb to remain in the hunt for a spot in the 2007
MAC Tournament, May 9-13 in Midland Mich. The top three teams in
each division, plus the next two teams with the best record, will
compete in the tournament. The Zips currently sit in the No. 7
spot, with games against Eastern Michigan (Friday) and Central
Michigan (Saturday and Sunday) this weekend.
The Buckeyes (31-15, 12-2) are in the hunt for the Big Ten title
and received 18 votes in this week's ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25
Poll. This will be the 20th meeting between the two schools, with
Ohio State holding a 12-7 advantage in the series.
In addition to the game, the softball team will host its
"Inaugural Strike-Out Cancer" event. In 2003, the American Cancer
Society and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association teamed up to
form the "Strike Out Cancer" program, which is a program that helps
create awareness, provide education and raise funds for the fight
against cancer.
There are two ways in which fans may participate at the game. They
can make a direct donation to the "Strike Out Cancer" program, or
make a pledge for every strike out that is recorded during the
game. The first 100 people to make a donation or pledge will
receive a free Strike Out Cancer t-shirt. Call 330-972-7848 for
more information or to make a donation.
