Women's Basketball Downed by Cleveland State
November 17 | Women's Basketball
The University of Akron women's basketball team got off to a
slow start and couldn't recover in a 59-47 defeat to Cleveland
State Saturday afternoon at the Wolstein Center. The loss dropped
the Zips' record to 1-2 on the season while the Vikings (1-1)
picked up their first win of the year.
"I'm very disappointed with our team's effort today," said UA head
coach Jodi Kest. "We clearly weren't ready to play. And
you have to give credit to Cleveland State they are a very
good basketball team. They played together, they played hard and
they played with a sense of urgency. Those were things we didn't do
today."
The Zips were victimized by 24 turnovers including 16
miscues in the first half and shot just 29.8 percent from
the floor for the game.
Sophomore Sarah Tokodi (Marietta, Ohio/Parkersburg
Catholic) led UA in scoring with 15 points, followed by freshman Keyla
Snowden (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic), who finished with
14.
Cleveland State jumped out to an 11-2 lead to start the game and
never relinquished its hold, taking a 28-16 lead into the break.
The Vikings didn't let up in the second period, using a 23-5 run to
push its advantage to 30 points, 51-21, with 10:42 left in
regulation.
To the Zips credit, the team didn't give up and scored 26 of the
last 34 points to end the game.
Zips Notebook: Freshman Kara
Murphy (Hartville, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary), who suffered
head and spinal concussions in a collision last winter in the state
high school playoffs, took a charge in the second half and had to
be assisted off the court after hitting her head on the floor ...
the Zips bench was out-scored 21-0 ... senior Kristina
Rosen (Spanga, Sweden/University of Stockholm) made her season
debut, logging four minutes and attempting one shot ... Lauren
Stephenson (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Pickerington) recorded five
points, four rebounds and a steal in 25 minutes.
