January 05 | Rifle
The University of Akron rifle team added to its list of
accomplishments through the first half of the season Friday by
placing seven of its 15 members on the Dean's List, head coach
Newt Engle announced.
Earning academic recognition were seniors
Angie Engle (Mogadore,
Ohio/Firestone) and
Laura Kuntz (Columbiana,
Ohio/South Range), juniors
Andrew Castano, (Cooper
City, Fla./North Florida)
April Engle (Mogadore,
Ohio/Firestone),
Stephanie Elmore (Salem,
Ore./Blanchet) and
Megan Reinking (Fort Wayne,
Ind./Concordia Lutheran), and freshman
Josh Fabijance (Niles,
Ohio/Niles McKinley). Overall, Kuntz recorded the top mark with a
3.68 GPA.
"Despite the fact that we have the largest roster we have ever had,
we still managed to get nearly half the team on the Dean's List,"
coach Engle said. "I'm proud of the entire team but especially
proud of the athletes who can excel on the range as well as in the
classroom."
To be on the Dean's List, UA students must achieve a semester
grade-point average of 3.25 or higher while enrolled in twelve or
more credits.
The Zips will carry their perfect 6-0 record into action next
weekend when they compete at Penn State on January 13 followed by
the Palmyra Invitational on January 14 where they will face-off
against reigning Mid-Atlantic Conference (MAC) champion, the United
States Navel Academy.
As a team, Akron is ranked second out of 15 schools in the MAC in
both the smallbore (.943 rating) and the air rifle (.951). Navy
leads both categories with a .955 rating in the smallbore and a
.973 mark in the air rifle.
Individually, the Zips have two shooters in the top ten in the
conference with sophomore
Julie DeBrita (Scotia,
N.Y./Scotia Glenville) ranked seventh with an average score of
569.40.
Angie Engle holds the
seventh spot with an average of 565.75.
DeBrita and fellow sophomore
Melissa Lussier (Clinton,
Conn./Middletown) are ranked 13th and 14th, respectively, in the
individual air rifle rankings.
