Akron Rifle Travels South For NCAA Qualifier
February 08 | Rifle
The University of Akron rifle team will travel to Converse Hall on the campus of The Ohio State University this Saturday, February 11 to try and clinch a spot for themselves in this year's NCAA Championships.
The Zips look forward to the NCAA Qualifier, with the sharp
shooting of Julie DeBrita (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia Glenville),
Stephanie Elmore (Salem, Ore./Blanchet) and Melissa Lussier
(Clinton, Conn./Middletown) leading the way. DeBrita and Elmore
have been the top shooters in the smallbore throughout the year for
the blue and gold.
Lussier has been steady in both the air rifle and smallbore. Air
rifle has been her best, which was obvious in the Palmyra
Invitational that invites all the best shooters, ranging from
collegiate student-athletes to Olympic hopefuls to high school
students, throughout the nation to compete. Individually, she
finished twelfth at the Invitational in the air rifle event, and
placed in the top-thirty among the hundreds of competitors for the
smallbore.
The 48-shooter NCAA Championships field is made up of the top-eight
teams in each discipline as well as the top individuals to fill out
the remaining slots. The championships will be held in Colorado
Springs, Colo., March 10-11 at the United States Olympic Training
Center.
Following the NCAA Qualifier, they will compete in two more
championships as they prepare for the NCAA Championships. On
February 28, the Zips will travel to West Lafayette, Ind. for the
Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference (WIRC) Championships. The
following weekend, they will travel to New London, Conn. in hopes
of taking home the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Championship.
