AKRON, Ohio - Mycah Clemons of Pittsburgh won the pentathlon this evening highlighting the opening day of the Akron Open men's and women's track and field non-scored meet at the University of Akron's Athletics Field House.
Clemons tallied 3,563 points over the five events to out-distance Inshirah Grimes of Loyola-Chicago (3,287) and Nina Reinhardt of Bucknell (3,198). Akron's Jen Osborn (West Chester, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame HS) finished sixth with a personal-best total of 3,077 in the 14-women field.
Osborn was paced by a second-place tie in the high jump (5-01) and a runner-up showing in the 800 meters (2:29.59), the final event of the pentathlon. Lindsay Deason of DePaul edged Osborn at the tape in the 800 and took fifth-place overall with 3,078.
Ceith Creekmur of Miami, competing unattached, is the day one leader of the heptathlon with a total of 3,117 points. Ben Haber of Cincinnati is second (2941), while teammate Patrick Dunn is third with 2,720.
Akron's Weston Lott (Berea, Oho/Berea HS) and Nick Continenza (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon HS) are fifth and sixth, respectively, in the nine-man field. Lott, competing in his first collegiate multi-event, tallied 2,295, just four points ahead of Continenza.
The men and women throwers also staged the discus, an event not
normally run during the indoor season. Auston Papay (Sharon,
Pa./Sharon HS) and Randall Hafner (Willard, Ohio/Willard HS) of
Akron finished first and second, respectively, with throws of
173-05 and 164-10.

Melissa Bickett, formerly of Michigan, won the women's draw with a toss of 170-06. Jenna Strouse (Mt. Vernon, Ohio/Mt. Vernon) and Stevi Large (Somerset, Ohio/Sheridan HS) of Akron went 2-3 with throws of 157-06 and 154-03.
The two-day meet ends tomorrow. The day's events starts at 9 a.m. with the conclusion of the pentathlon. Blue division track and field events kick off at 11 a.m. with the elite Gold Invitational events starting at 3 p.m.
