Zips Sweep Doubleheader at C of C Invitational

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- - Akron softball extended its win streak to three games with a pair of victories over East Carolina, 1-0, and North Florida, 4-0, on day two of the College of Charleston Invitational in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. The remainder of the tournament's Saturday games were canceled due to inclement weather.
The Zips pounded out a season-high 11 hits in the win over North Florida, with Sara Zilles (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), Cali Stratton (Liberty, Mo./Liberty) and Lisa McLean (Canton, Ohio/Perry) leading the charge with two hits each.
Akron took what would be an insurmountable lead with a run in the top of the first inning as Zilles led off with a single to left field and scored on Stratton's single to center field. The Zips tacked on two more runs in the second inning with McLean lacing an RBI single to right field and Amy Pedro (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) scoring on an error by the catcher after reaching on a single.
Freshman Julie Boyes (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) remained perfect in the circle, picking up her second victory of the season.
Pitcher Megan MacKenzie (Delta, British Columbia/North Delta)
had another solid outing in game one of the doubleheader, striking
out nine and allowing just three this in the 1-0 victory over the
Pirates. With the win, MacKenzie improves to 2-2 on the season.

The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Zips recorded both of their hits in the game. Pedro led off with a single and advanced to second on Deanna McCauley's (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) sacrifice bunt. With Pedro on second and two outs, Zilles rocketed a double down the left field line to drive in the winning run.
Due to Saturday's cancellations, Sunday's tournament schedule has been altered. The Zips, who were originally scheduled to play Marshall and Dayton, will now play a single game against the Thundering Herd at 10 a.m.
