Zips Rifle Prepared To Defend WIRC Championship

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron rifle team is preparing for the Western Intercollegiate Rifle Championship, which will be held at Purdue University in West Layfayette, Ind.
The Zips are coming off from a two-week break from competition. Their last meet was the NCAA Qualifier on Feb. 11 in Columbus, Ohio. Akron shot a season-high overall score of 4,581 out of 4,800 to claim first place finish in both the air rifle (2,308 points) and smallbore (2,273 points) portion of the event.
Last year at the WIRC, the Zips finished first in both the air rifle (1,524) and smallbore (2,289). Laura Kuntz and April Engle are the only returners that finished in the top-three in either portions of the meet. Laura finished third in the smallbore with a score of 578, while Engle took top honors in the air rifle. Also in 2004, the Zips won the team smallbore portion of event, finishing second in the air rifle.
The other schools that the Zips will be competing against this weekend will be Missouri-Kansas City, Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Ohio State, Morehead State, Purdue, Grand Valley State, St. Louis and Michigan.
