Central Michigan Knocks Down The Zips, 60-44

Akron, Ohio - The University of Akron women's basketball team (4-18, 1-10 Mid-American Conference) was unable to overcome a suffocating defensive effort from the Central Michigan Chippewas (14-8, 5-6), as they fall 60-44 at Rhodes Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Central Michigan dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Zips 47-15 on the day. The Chippewas had 19 offensive rebounds, which matched the Zips rebound total for the game. The Zips were outshot 46 percent to 33 percent and received only eight points from the bench. Jessica Deville was the only point-scorer off of the bench for Akron, as she went 3-8 from the field for eight points.
Both teams had trouble scoring early in the contest, with Akron taking a 7-4 lead off of a Courtney Stewart three-pointer with 16:18 remaining in the first half. Points for the Zips were hard to come by after that, as CMU went on a 12-2 run over the next 10:00 minutes. The Chippewas out-rebounded the Zips, 28-11 in the first half, resulting in eight points in the paint. The Zips went 6-23 from the field, shooting only 26% in the first 20-minutes.
Akron trailed at the half, 25-15, as CMU's Chasidy Myers and Ann
Skufca combined their efforts in the paint to score 12 of the
Chippewas points and 12 of their rebounds. Central Michigan had 11
turnovers which resulted in nine points for Akron, besting the
Chippewas eight points off of 11 turnovers. Jessie Crooks led the
Zips in the first half with six points, as she went 2-2 from beyond
the three-point line.

Akron came into the second half with renewed energy and cut the lead to eight with 16:41 remaining. Crooks knocked down another three-pointer and a jumper just inside the arc to lead the Zips resurgence. Stewart also helped the Zips cause, scoring nine of her 14 points in the second half. Her three-pointer at the 14:14 mark, cut the Chippewa lead to 34-28.
Central Michigan began to regain control of the game at the 12:21 mark, when Myers hit a lay-up in a group of Zips defenders. CMU went on a 16-4 run over the next eight minutes to take a commanding 52-32 lead behind 15 points on 7-12 shooting from Sharonda Hurd, who added 11 rebounds to the Chippewa effort. Hurd's double-double figures led all scorers and all rebounders. Myers scored 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots.
Stewart led the Zips with 14 points and five rebounds. Crooks was close behind with 11 points, going 3-5 from beyond the three-point arc.
The Zips return to action in Mid-American Conference play when they face the Bowling Green Falcons Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. EST at Rhodes Arena.
