Rifle Returns to Action This Weekend
December 07 | Rifle
The University of Akron rifle team will look to continue its
winning ways when it hosts Rose Hulman Institute of Technology
Saturday at Schrank Hall South.
The Zips, who are undefeated after their first five contests of
2006, will see their first action in more than three weeks after
last topping Morehead State University and Indiana University of
Pennsylvania on Nov. 18.
UA defeated Rose Hulman last year in Terre Haute, Ind. behind
dominating performances in the air rifle division. Led by a score
of 582 from sophomore
Melissa Lussier (Clinton,
Conn./Middletown), the Zips claimed the top four slots. Akron was
nearly as successful in the smallbore as junior
Stephanie Elmore (Salem,
Ore./Blanchet) brought home top honors with a score of 575,
followed by Lussier (573) and sophomore
Julie DeBrita (Scotia,
N.Y./Scotia Glenville).
DeBrita enters the weekend as the fourth-ranked shooter in the
Mid-Atlantic Conference with a team-high smallbore average of
569.4. Senior
Angie Engle (Mogadore,
Ohio/Firestone) jumped three slots in the league rankings to 7th
after a second-place finish against Morehead State and Indiana
University (Pa.) two weeks ago. Junior
Megan Reinking (Fort Wayne,
Ind./Concordia Lutheran) and Lussier are ranked 13th and 15th,
respectively.
DeBrita leads Akron with an average of 571.8 in the air rifle
(13th), followed closely by Lussier's 571.0 mark (14th). As a team,
the Zips have a rating of .951, second only to Navy in the MAC.
