Zips Fall 17-0 To Western Michigan
November 25 | Football
AKRON, Ohio (AP) -Ryan Cubit threw for 217 yards and a touchdown to lead Western Michigan to a 17-0 win over Akron on Friday night.
The win will likely help the Broncos (8-4, 6-2 Mid-American Conference) secure a bowl invitation for the first time since 1988, when they fell to Fresno State in the California Bowl.
Cubit was 17-of-29 with one interception and threw a 16-yard scoring pass to Keith Schultz in the third quarter. Brandon West scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth for the Broncos, and Jamarko Simmons had eight catches for 98 yards.
Luke Getsy (Munhall,
Pa./Steel Valley/Pittsburgh) completed 13 of 26 passes for 132
yards for Akron (5-7, 3-5 MAC). He threw one interception and was
sacked five times. Getsy finished with minus-33 yards rushing, and
the Broncos held the Zips to 119 total yards. Akron was held
scoreless for the first time since a 20-0 loss to Army on Oct. 22,
2005.
Running back Dennis Kennedy (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Stranahan) was limited to just 22 yards on 11 carries, and also grabbed a team-high five passes. Jermaine Lindsay (Bowie, Md./Forrestville) hauled in two receptions for 49 yards, including a 41-yard catch in the third quarter.
Western Michigan led 3-0 at halftime on Nate Meyer's 38-yard field goal.
Reggie Corner (Canton, Ohio/McKinley) picked off his fourth pass of the season on the Broncos' opening drive, but the Zips came up emply-handed when Matt Domonkos' (Windber, Pa./Bishop McCort/Wisconsin) 48-yard field goal attempt was blocked. Domonkos also had a 54-yard attempt on the final play of the second quarter that fell short.
Trailing 3-0 at the start of the third quarter, Western Michigan marched the ball down to the Akron eight-yard line, but Al-Terric Balaam (New Brunswick, N.J./New Brunswick) blocked Nate Meyer's 21-yard field goal attempt.
Twelve Akron seniors played their final game in the blue and
gold, including Getsy and defensive linemen
Kiki Gonzalez (Elizabeth,
N.J./Elizabeth) and
Jermaine Reid (Pickering,
Ontario/St. Mary's Catholic HS).
