Rubber Bowl • Friday, Nov. 24
Postgame Notes
Akron Team Notes:
• Today's outcome snapped a four-game home winning streak
for Akron in 2006 and a six-game home winning streak for the Zips
overall, dating back to last season. It was the worst home defeat
for UA since Army shut out Akron 20-0 on Oct. 22, 2005.
• Akron was shut out for the first time in 2006 and failed to
score in the first three quarters for the second straight game.
Including last Thursday's game at Ohio University, UA has been held
scoreless in seven out of its last eight quarters. The Zips' lone
score in their past eight quarters was a fourth-quarter touchdown
pass from
Luke Getsy to
Jabari Arthur against the
Bobcats.
• UA trailed 3-0 at the half. It was the lowest-scoring first
half at the Rubber Bowl this season. The Zips had averaged 30.75
points per game in their four previous home contests in 2006.
• The Zips defense held Western Michigan scoreless in the
first quarter, marking the sixth time this season UA has shutout
its opponent in the opening period.
• The Akron defense came up with a huge play with 12:30
remaining in the third quarter with its second blocked field goal
of the year. Freshman LB
Al-Teric Balaam stuffed a
21-yard attempt by Nate Meyer to record UA's first blocked field
goal attempt since senior DB Devanzo Tate accomplished the feat at
Kent State on Sept. 30.
Akron Player Notes:
• Senior DB
Reggie Corner ended Western
Michigan's first offensive series with his team-leading 4th
interception of the season with 11:25 remaining in the first
quarter. It was the eighth career interception for Corner, who led
the Zips with two interceptions a year ago.
• Freshman P
John Stec boomed a
career-long 57-yard punt late in the second quarter.
• Junior WR
Jabari Arthur recorded
three receptions against the Broncos to move into 10th place on the
school's career receptions list with 98. Matt Cherry (2000-03) is
UA's all-time leader with 149.
Western Michigan Notes:
• Broncos' LB Ameer Ismail tied and then set a Mid-American
Conference single-season record with his 16th and 17th sacks of the
season.
• WMU recorded its sixth blocked field goal of the year in the
first quarter when NG Cory Flom got a hand on a 48-yard attempt by
Akron PK
Matt Domonkos.
Individually, it was Flom's fourth blocked field goal on the
season.
• Senior DE Matt Ludeman's second-quarter interception was
the first of his career. Ludeman was the benefactor of a tipped
pass from
Luke Getsy that was
intended for
Jabari Arthur.
• Junior TE Keith Schultz recorded the third touchdown
reception of his career with a 19-yard grab with 6:41 remaining in
the third quarter to give the Broncos a 10-0 lead. All three of
Schultz's career touchdowns have come this season.
• Freshman RB Brandon West recorded his second career
touchdown run on a 1-yard carry with 4:06 left in the third
quarter.
