AKRON - March Madness was in full bloom Saturday evening in Buffalo, N.Y., as the 12th seeded Akron Zip women's basketball team stunned #5 seed Buffalo, 65-64, on a last-second three-point basket by UA's all-time leading scorer Cheryl Bowles.
The Zips, now 6-22, will play #4 seed Northern Illinois (15-15) Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at Gund Arena in Cleveland. The winner will play again Friday at noon at Gund against the #1 Toledo-#9 Bowling Green winner with the game to be televised by Fox Sports Net.
The Buffalo win marks Akron's second MAC Tournament victory in the last three years. The Zips reached the MAC tourney semifinals in coach Roxanne Allen's second year in 1999. Buffalo is 19-9 and hoping for a WNIT berth.
