Zips Picked Second in East in MAC Preseason Poll

AKRON- In a preseason poll conducted among members of the MAC News Media Association, The University of Akron football squad is picked to finish second in the East Division behind defending league champion Marshall. In the West Division, Toledo was the top vote-getter. The results were compiled and released at today's Mid-American Conference Football Media Day held at Cobo Hall in Detroit.
Akron (7-4, 5-3 MAC in 1999) garnered seven first-place votes and a total of 310 points. The Zips also received two votes in a poll of possible MAC Championship Game winners. The Thundering Herd, coming off an undefeated 13-0 record in 1999, were are the favorites in the East with 45 first-place votes and 403 total points. They are also favored to defend their title in the MAC Championship Game, slated for Dec. 2 in Huntington, W.V.. Miami came in third in East voting and was followed by Ohio, Bowling Green, Kent and Buffalo.
In the West, Toledo earned 45 first-place votes and 408 points. Western Michigan was voted second, followed by Northern Illinois, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Ball State.

Note: Points were awarded on the basis of 7 for first place,
6 for second place, 5 for third, 4 for fourth, 3 for fifth, 2 for
sixth and 1 for seventh.
