Zips Suffer 84-57 loss to No. 21 Xavier
December 22 | Women's Basketball
AKRON, Ohio- Led by a school-record 11 steals and 18 points from Nicole Levandusky, No. 21 Xavier defeated Akron, 84-57, Friday night at JAR Arena. The Zips fell to 2-9 overall while the Musketeers improved to 8-1 for the season.
Akron opened strong when on Xavier's first possession, freshman guard Katrina Carter (Nashville/Hillsboro) stole the ball and took it to the other end for a layup. A three-pointer by Cheryl Bowles (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill) put Akron up 7-2 at the 17:00 minute mark.
From that point on the Musketeers took over, spurred by a strong inside game that saw them score 40 of their 50 first-half points on layups. In addition, Levandusky had seven of her school-record 11 steals in the first period and finished with a game-high 18 points.
The Zips stayed in the game thanks to a hot three-point shot, hitting five of nine attempts in the half. Hollie Stephenson (Hahira, Ga./Lowdnes) was 2-of-4 from the three-point arc in the first period, while Carter, Bowles and Jamie Krivak (Columbia Station/Columbia) each had one. The Musketeers took a 50-31 lead into the lockerroom at the half.
Akron's second half woes were evident in its shooting game, hitting just seven of 29 shots. Bowles was just 1-of-5 for the second period but finished the game with 12 points. Stephenson also finished with 12 to lead the team, while Jamie Scott (Canal Winchester) was 4-of-6 from the field with eight points and four rebounds.
The Zips will take a break for the holidays before returning to
the court on Jan. 3 for the Mid-American Conference season opener
at Bowling Green. Akron's next home contest is Wednesday, Jan. 10
against Miami.
